Getting Started: What's in the Box?
Before you power on your new Canon PIXMA printer, take a moment to unpack and identify all the included components. Most Canon PIXMA models come with:
- The printer unit itself
- Ink cartridges (starter or full-size, depending on model)
- Power cord
- USB cable (on some models)
- Quick Start Guide / Setup CD (on some models)
Keep the packaging material until you confirm everything is working correctly, in case you need to return or exchange the unit.
Step 1: Remove All Protective Packaging
Canon printers ship with orange protective tape and foam inserts to prevent damage during transit. Before turning on the printer, you must remove all of this material:
- Open the top cover or front panel.
- Remove any orange tape from inside the printer, including around the print head carriage.
- Remove the foam padding from the paper tray and output tray area.
- Close all covers securely before proceeding.
Tip: Leaving protective tape inside can cause paper jams or damage the print mechanism.
Step 2: Connect the Power Cable and Turn On
Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and connect the other end to a wall outlet. Press the Power button — typically marked with the universal power symbol. The printer will initialize and the display or indicator lights will activate.
Step 3: Install the Ink Cartridges
Most Canon PIXMA printers use separate ink cartridges for each color. Here's how to install them:
- Open the front cover or scanning unit to access the cartridge holder.
- Wait for the print head carriage to move to the center installation position.
- Remove each cartridge from its packaging and peel off the orange protective cap and tape.
- Insert each cartridge into the corresponding slot — colors are usually labeled or color-coded.
- Press each cartridge down firmly until it clicks into place.
- Close the cover when all cartridges are installed.
Step 4: Load Paper into the Tray
Pull out the paper tray (or rear tray on supported models) and load plain A4 or letter-size paper. Adjust the paper guides to fit snugly against the edges of the paper stack — not too tight, not too loose.
Step 5: Install Drivers and Software
To print from your computer, you need to install the Canon printer driver. You have two options:
- Via the Web: Visit Canon's official support website, search for your printer model, and download the latest driver package for your operating system.
- Via Setup CD: If your printer came with a CD and your computer has a disc drive, insert it and follow the on-screen prompts.
During installation, the wizard will ask whether you want to connect via USB or Wi-Fi. Choose the method that suits your setup.
Step 6: Run the Initial Setup and Print a Test Page
Once drivers are installed, the setup utility may prompt you to:
- Align the print head
- Print a nozzle check pattern
- Calibrate color output
Follow these prompts to ensure the best print quality from the start. Then print a test page from your computer's printer settings to confirm everything is working.
Troubleshooting First-Time Setup Issues
If your printer isn't detected or won't print after setup, try these quick fixes:
- Restart both the printer and your computer.
- Ensure the USB cable is fully seated or that Wi-Fi credentials were entered correctly.
- Check that the printer is set as the default printer in your system settings.
- Re-download and reinstall the driver if the installation failed.
With these steps complete, your Canon PIXMA should be ready for everyday printing. Refer to other guides on this site for wireless setup, driver updates, and maintenance tips.
