Why Drivers Matter for Your Canon Printer
A printer driver is the software that allows your computer's operating system to communicate with your Canon printer. Without the correct driver, your computer either won't recognize the printer at all, or you'll experience limited functionality — missing features like duplex printing, scan utilities, or custom paper sizes.
Canon regularly releases driver updates to fix bugs, improve compatibility with new OS versions, and enhance performance. Keeping your driver current is one of the easiest ways to avoid printing problems.
Step 1: Identify Your Canon Printer Model
Before downloading anything, confirm your exact printer model name. You can find this:
- Printed on a label on the front or top of the printer
- On the original box or packaging
- Inside the printer settings menu (on models with a display screen)
Examples include: Canon PIXMA MG3620, Canon PIXMA TS9120, Canon MAXIFY MB5420, Canon imageCLASS MF445dw.
Step 2: Check Your Operating System Version
Drivers are OS-specific. Make sure you know which version you're running:
- Windows: Go to Settings → System → About to see your Windows version (e.g., Windows 11 Home 64-bit).
- Mac: Click the Apple menu → About This Mac to find your macOS version (e.g., macOS Ventura 13.x).
Step 3: Download the Driver from Canon's Official Site
- Open a web browser and navigate to Canon's official support/download page for your region.
- Enter your printer model name in the search field.
- Select your printer from the results list.
- Choose your operating system from the dropdown menu.
- Locate the Drivers section (separate from Firmware or Manuals).
- Click Download next to the most recent driver package.
Always download from Canon's official website to avoid outdated or potentially unsafe third-party driver files.
Step 4: Install the Driver on Windows
- Locate the downloaded .exe file in your Downloads folder.
- Double-click the file to launch the installer.
- Click Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
- Follow the on-screen installation wizard — accept the license agreement, choose your connection type (USB or Wi-Fi), and complete the prompts.
- Restart your computer when installation is complete.
Step 5: Install the Driver on Mac
- Open the downloaded .dmg file from your Downloads folder.
- Double-click the installer package inside the disk image.
- Follow the installation prompts and enter your Mac administrator password when asked.
- After installation, go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add your Canon printer if it doesn't appear automatically.
Canon Software Bundled with Drivers
Many Canon driver packages include additional software tools worth knowing about:
| Software | What It Does |
|---|---|
| My Image Garden | Organizes photos and enables creative printing layouts |
| IJ Scan Utility | Manages scanning tasks from your computer |
| Quick Menu | Provides quick access to print and scan functions |
| Easy-WebPrint EX | Clips and prints web pages cleanly |
You can choose to install just the driver, or the full software suite during setup.
Updating an Existing Driver
If your printer is already set up but you want to update the driver, follow the same download steps above. Before installing the new version, it's good practice to uninstall the old driver first via Control Panel → Programs and Features (Windows) or by removing the printer and deleting its software from Applications (Mac).
Using Windows Update or Mac Auto-Detection
Both Windows and macOS can sometimes detect and install a basic Canon driver automatically when you connect via USB. However, these auto-installed drivers may not include the full feature set. For complete functionality, always prefer Canon's official driver package.
