About Canon imageCLASS Printers

Canon's imageCLASS series consists of laser printers and multifunction devices designed for home offices and small businesses. Unlike inkjet PIXMA printers, imageCLASS models use toner cartridges and are optimized for high-volume document printing. Popular models include the MF445dw, MF267dw, LBP6030w, and MF743Cdw.

This guide covers the initial setup process for most imageCLASS models, including both wired USB and wireless Wi-Fi connections.

Step 1: Unbox and Prepare the Printer

When unboxing your imageCLASS printer, you'll find:

  • The printer unit
  • Toner cartridge (starter or standard yield)
  • Power cord
  • Telephone cable (on fax-capable models)
  • Quick Setup Guide

Remove all orange tape and protective packaging from the exterior and interior. Open the front panel and remove any cardboard inserts around the toner cartridge area.

Step 2: Install the Toner Cartridge

  1. Open the front cover of the printer.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge from its packaging and gently shake it side-to-side 5–6 times to distribute the toner evenly.
  3. Pull the sealing tape completely out of the cartridge — pull it straight and firmly in the direction indicated on the cartridge.
  4. Slide the cartridge into the printer along the guides until it clicks into place.
  5. Close the front cover firmly.

Do not expose the drum unit (the green cylinder on the cartridge) to direct light for extended periods, as this can damage it.

Step 3: Load Paper and Connect Power

Pull out the paper cassette tray and load A4 or letter-size paper. Adjust the paper width and length guides to match the paper size. Slide the tray back into the printer.

Connect the power cord and press the power button. The printer will warm up and display a setup screen or print a startup page.

Step 4A: Connecting via USB

For a direct USB connection to your computer:

  1. Do not connect the USB cable yet — connect it only when prompted during driver installation.
  2. Download the full driver package for your imageCLASS model from Canon's official website.
  3. Run the installer and select USB Connection when asked.
  4. When prompted, connect the USB cable between the printer and your computer.
  5. The installer will complete the driver setup automatically.

Step 4B: Connecting via Wi-Fi

imageCLASS printers with wireless capability can be connected via:

Option A — Using the Printer's LCD Panel

  1. Press the Menu button on the printer.
  2. Navigate to Network Settings → Wireless LAN Settings.
  3. Select SSID Settings → Select Access Point.
  4. Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list.
  5. Enter the Wi-Fi password and confirm.

Option B — WPS Push Button

  1. On the printer's menu, navigate to Network Settings → Wireless LAN Settings → WPS Push Button Mode.
  2. Press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.
  3. The printer will connect automatically.

Step 5: Install Drivers and Software

Once the printer is connected (USB or Wi-Fi), install the complete driver and software package:

  • Visit Canon's support site and search for your imageCLASS model number.
  • Download the MF Printer Driver (for printing) and optionally the MF Scan Utility (for scanning on MFP models).
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen steps.

Step 6: Print a Test Page

To confirm the printer is correctly set up:

  1. On Windows, go to Settings → Printers & scanners, select your Canon imageCLASS, and click Print a test page.
  2. On Mac, go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners, select the printer, and click Open Print Queue → Printer → Print Test Page.
